REDEFINING RURAL HEALTHCARE
With third degree burns from an accident in the kitchen, Mr. Effa, our assistant farm manager, was rushed to the Tarkwa Breman Community Clinic just as the day was winding down. With burns this severe, the protocol is to administer first aid, and arrange for transfer to the regional facility, 3-hours away. Unfortunately, this was not an option due to the perennial flooding that comes with the rainy season. Every year, Tarkwa Breman and its surrounding villages are cut off from the rest of the world for days, in rare instances, weeks while flood waters resulting from the swelling of the local rivers from the heavy tropical storms make the the only road out of the village is impassable.
With limited options, the clinic staff made the decision to treat Mr. Effa as best as they could. With only one bed in the clinic, typically reserved for recovering new mothers, the team could only hope that none of the expectant mothers in their care went into labor during this period. Redefining Rural Healthcare; the clinic’s motto was brought to life in this period as the team worked round the clock to provide exceptional care for Mr. Effa. After 10-days in admission, Mr. Effa was well enough to transition to home care, where he received frequent and timely visits from the clinic staff to ensure his full recovery.
Today, Mr. Effa has received a clean bill of health, save for the scars that remain, he is back to his old self. He and his family continually express deep gratitude for the expertise and care that they received, and they note that this care would have been unaffordable if he’d been sent to the regional facility.
It is because of the generous donations from you that we are able to provide this critical, lifesaving care to our rural community. From Mr. Effa, his family and all of us at Cocoa360, Thank you for your generous support of our work.
